Open Track Webinar: Participatory AI Assurance

This open track webinar is entitled Participatory AI Assurance: giving people a way to contest automated decisions in public services.

Public bodies across Europe and Southeast Asia use artificial intelligence to decide who receives benefits, housing, and care. European law already gives affected people the right to complain and the right to an explanation. Those rights are difficult to use, because no procedure connects a complaint to a review with power to correct the decision.

This session presents a toolkit that supplies the missing procedure: triggers that open an independent review, defined powers for affected people inside that review, and procurement terms that make compliance the cheaper option. Cases from Indonesia and Denmark show what changes in practice.

This session features Naveena Karusala, an Assistant Professor in the School of Interactive Computing at Georgia Tech, whose research focuses on human-centered AI and health/well-being in underserved communities, as well as three of our Emerging Leaders in Ethical AI Governance Fellows.
