Ecological Lessons from the Akosombo and Kpong Dam Spills
As Ghana prioritises the cost of infrastructural damage, loss of livelihoods, and possible human casualties over the Akosombo and Kpong Dam spills, this webinar, organised by Globethics Western Africa Centre (Accra) represents a call to reflect on the lessons learnt from these environmental disasters, and identify actions to mitigate future occurrence.
This webinar will focus on the ecological integrity of the lake as it provides those ecosystem services and how this integrity can be maintained. The key aims of the webinar are to:
- Reflect on and analyse the lessons from the dam spills;
- Raise awareness of climate change in relation to the Volta River system and the importance of responsible preservation of the Volta Gorge ecosystem;
- Foster a sense of shared responsibility and collaboration for environmental preservation and water resources;
- Propose sustainable strategies to mitigate the future occurrence of negative dam spill impact and the ecological consequences of dam spills; and
- Explore the role(s) participating individuals and institutions are willing to play together with Globethics to address the issues around environmental sustainability in the shared water ecosystem in Ghana.
