LatAm Global Dialogue on AI Governance

On 24 June 2026, Globethics, represented by our AI Ethics Manager, Paola Galvez Callirgos, and Latin America and the Caribbean Regional Manager, Maria Eugenia Barroso, participated in the Third Ministerial Summit and High Authorities Meeting on the Ethics of Artificial Intelligence in Latin America and the Caribbean, held in Santo Domingo, Dominican Republic.
Globethics joined government authorities, international organisations, academics, and civil society representatives gathered by UNESCO, CAF -banco de desarrollo de América Latina y el Caribe, and the Oficina Gubernamental de Tecnologías de la Información y Comunicación (Government Office for Information Technologies and Communication - OGTIC) to discuss the future of AI governance in the region.
Maria Eugenia Barroso shared her key takeaway from the Summit: "Latin America and the Caribbean have a key opportunity: to continue building their own ethical AI agenda, based on cooperation, plural participation and a deeply people-centered perspective."

Bringing Latin America's Voice to the Global Dialogue on AI Governance

As part of its contribution to the Summit, Globethics co-organised, together with UNESCO and with the support of OGTIC, a side event aimed at developing a regional position paper to bring the voices of civil society organizations and the academia from Latin America and the Caribbean to the UN's Global Dialogue on AI Governance which will take place in Geneva on 6-7 July.
The side event process began on 19 June with a virtual preparatory meeting that brought together more than 20 organisations from civil society and academia across the region.

Participants discussed key challenges and opportunities related to AI governance and identified common regional priorities.
As highlighted during the exchange by Adriana Baravalle (Universidad Austral): “Without sovereignty over our data and infrastructure, countries in Latin America and the Caribbean remain in a subordinate position in the global digital economy.”

Globethics also has the honour of co-hosting a side event of the First Session of the Global Dialogue on AI Governance in Geneva, specifically exploring Gendering AI: Pathways for Gender-Responsive and Inclusive Governance. Paola Galvez Callirgos will join other AI ethics experts at the session to address the intersection of gender justice and algorithmic governance.

Through our participation in the Santo Domingo and Geneva dialogues, Globethics reaffirms its commitment to advancing inclusive and ethical AI governance across the Latin America and the Caribbean region, and globally.
